FRIENDS OF ANAHUAC REFUGE
What is a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all living species within a designated area.
The Friends of Anahuac Refuge are sponsoring a yearlong BioBlitz of Anahuac NWR using the online social network of naturalists known as iNaturalist.
Anyone can participate in the BioBlitz and you can “blitz” on your own as your time permits.
iNaturalist works by submitting photos or sound recordings through the iNaturalist website (www.inaturalist.org) or through the smart phone app iNaturalist. There is no charge to participate and you can log in with a variety of IDs such as Facebook, Google, or Flickr, or you can create a new ID. Once you’ve logged in go and join our Project by searching for Anahuac NWR 2018 BioBlitz
With the app you can submit photos direct from your phone, no need for a super-telephoto lens, you can participate by using your phone to take close ups of insects, flowers, mushrooms, etc.
Don’t know your craneflies from your ladybugs? That’s ok, iNaturalist has two ways to help you. First when you submit a photo iNaturalist will run it through the “Identitron” and suggest an ID. If you like that ID you can accept it. If you are not sure submit the ID the best you can. Say all you know is that this is an insect, submit it as an insect. The community of iNaturalist will then go to work figuring out the ID. Usually in a few hours you can have an ID of your “Narrow-headed Sun Fly”
Help us create an inventory of all the species at Anahuac NWR, you’ll find it’s a lot of fun and can be addicting. We look forward to seeing what you find this year!
